Calcavecchia wins Boca Raton

Mark Calcavecchia grabbed his chance when Bernhard Langer stumbled at the last two holes to win the PGA Tour Champions' season-0pening Boca Raton Championship on The Old Course at Broken Sound on Sunday.

Calcavecchia, 1989 Open Champion and winner of 13 PGA Tour titles, parred the final two holes after a brilliant bogey save with a 20 foot putt at 16 to post a final round 2-under 70, close with a 16-under 200 and win his 4th senior title by two strokes from Langer, the 60-year-old winner of seven over-50 titles last year, three of them in senior majors.

Langer, who also closed with a 70, was tied for the lead after Calcavecchia's bogey on 16, but the legendary German slipped back on  the par-4 17th when he left a 4-foot par putt hanging on the right lip and then bogeyed the par-5 18th after first driving into pine straw and wood chips before finding two bunkers prior to making the green.

Earlier  57-year-old Calcavecchia had shot a wonderful 64 for a one-stroke lead in the 1st round and birdied the final three holes in Saturday's 2nd round for a 66 that sent him two shots clear of Langer before heading into his wire-to-wire victory in Sunday's 3rd and final round.

Fred Funk took third place with his 13 under after a closing 67 and fellow American David Toms was 4th, a further shot back after a 67.

Meanwhile, at the back of the field little-known, Charlie Rymer finished stone last in his senior debut. He shots rounds of 76, 77 and 87.
