South Korea's Jin Jeong won his first European Tour title at the Perth International, hosted by Lake Karrinyup Country Club. This course review takes a look at the history and highlights of this iconic Australian golf course.
Karrinyup Country Club enjoys a reputation for being one of the best golfing facilities in Australia. The 27-hole course, which combines the original 9-hole course designed by Alex Russell with the 18-hole championship layout, first opened its doors to golfers in 1928.
The championship course was built later, following the design of Mike Clayton. Eighty-five years later, Karrinyup has become the grand dame of Western Australian golf – the course has hosted several tournaments over the years, including four Australian Opens and two Johnny Walker Classics.
The 18-hole championship course at Karrinyup is a par-72, with an undulating terrain and tree-lined fairways surrounded by local vegetation, including the Australian gum-tree. The lengthy 6531-meter course is laid out around Lake Karrinyup, which acts as a large water hazard on several of the holes while offering players a scenic golfing experience.
The course at Karrinyup is known for its wide fairways, which require different tee shots on almost every hole. Long hitters will benefit from plenty of landing space on the wide fairways, but the path from fairway to green requires an accurate short game. In this way, Karrinyup offers a challenging but enjoyable 18 holes of golf to players with different strengths. Here are some highlights from the course:
