Apparently, the 28-year-old Englishman ran out of golf balls - a first for a European tour player since 1994.
Pepperell was already 2 over after bogging the 2nd and 3rd hole at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Antalya, Turkey. He then drawed his approach into the pond guarding the 4th hole green.
So, according to an ESPN report, at this point, neither Pepperell nor his caddie were aweare on how many balls the 28-year-old had dunked into the lake.
"Pepperell hit his shots to the green, then came over to tell us he had run out of balls," Kaymer told reporters. "Then he walked away. I thought he lost four or five. We are about 80 percent sure it was five, and 20 percent sure it was four. He was quick, so it was hard to keep track. But, he did not ask if he could borrow one from me or George. So, it did not look like he wanted to play. He did not even putt with his putter on the 3rd hole; he putted with a wedge. So, there was a lot happening."
"I have never seen anything like that before," added Kaymer, a two-time major champion. "I only watched it on television, in 'Tin Cup.' This is the first time I have seen it live."
The event officials at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal then declared Pepperell was officially disqualified for "failure to complete a hole."
