World Rankings: Potter rockets 173 places

One time World No 1 Jason Day continues to climb up the World Ranking list while Rory McIlroy's two or three steps forward last week has been followed this week by two steps backwards.

Day, who started the year at No 13 after a miserable 2017, but quickly moved up to No 10 on the strength his win at the Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago, has now climbed two more places to No 8 following his second-place tie at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday.

Day ousts McIlroy whose woeful putting at Pebble Beach saw the Northern Irishman miss the cut which has consequently dropped him from 8th to a 10th-place ranking.

Clearly the biggest leap of the week was the one made by 32-year Ted Potter Jnr, the complete outsider who came back from a serious ankle injury in 2014 and the two frustrating years it took to heal, fought his way back onto the PGA Tour via a year (2017)  on the feeder  WeB.Com Tour, slipped quietly into Pebble Beach this week and then came from nowhere to stun us all .
And perhaps nobody more so than the World No 1 Dustin Johnson who he beat by three shots in a head-to-head duel coming down the final stretch.

For his heroics, Potter has seen his rankings rocket an astonishing 174 places from 246th to a very respectable No 72 - and, in doing so, he has  clearly set himself  a  new target of breaking into the now reachable Top-50 rankings bubble and getting all the rewards that go with it, including tickets to all the majors.
