On Sunday the American Matt Kuchar lifted the trophy for the second time this season, winning the Memorial Tournament and receiving the trophy from his golfing idol, Jack Nicklaus.
As Kuchar racks up victories on the PGA Tour, is his ambition of winning a major finally in sight? This week’s player profile looks at the recent career milestones of this seasoned player and looks at his chances of a major victory this season.
Kuchar has won six events on the US PGA Tour since his debut in the early 2000’s. With almost 15 years’ experience on the Tour and a career that has seen him weather several ups and downs as he built a solid reputation in North American golf, Kuchar has become a household name. From his first victory at the 2002 Honda Classic, through his slump in the mid-2000s and his successful comeback which began in 2009, Kuchar has proven his ability to win under tough conditions.
Although there are more than a few players who have won multiple titles on the PGA Tour over the past few years, Kuchar stands out for the quality of his playing because his past three wins have been at prestigious and challenging events – the 2012 Players Championship, the WGC Matchplay Championship in February, and Sunday’s win at the Memorial. These victories bode well for Kuchar’s chances of a major win as the American lays the ground work for a victory at the very highest level of golf.
On a personal level, Kuchar has expressed his wish to win a major championship on many occasions. Having achieved his two other important objectives – multiple wins in one season and a victory at the Memorial Tournament – Kuchar will be keen to tick the final item off his list by sealing a major victory. Time will tell whether this talented player will achieve his goal, but if his current form continues the chances of a major win are quite good for Matt Kuchar.
