On Sunday America’s Tracy Lewis won the Women’s British Open, marking the ninth professional title of her career. This week’s player profile looks at the successful career of this talented player as she establishes herself as a top international golfer.
28-year-old Lewis was born in Toledo, Ohio but grew up in Texas. She was diagnosed with Scoliosis (a spinal condition) at the age of eleven and underwent corrective surgery during her teens. Despite this physical challenge, Lewis forged ahead with her amateur and collegiate golf careers, becoming a four-time All-American during her years at the University of Arkansas despite missing the golf season in her freshman year due to back surgery.
In 2007, Lewis had her best-ever season on the amateur circuit and was named Golf Digest’s Amateur of the Year. The following season, she represented the United States at the Curtis Cup. Following a victory for the national team, Lewis took the decision to turn professional.
Now in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour, Lewis has won a total of eight professional events since her debut in 2008. The young Lewis weathered the pressure of playing at the highest level of women’s golf without any trouble, carding her first victory at the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship, beating South Korea’s Yani Tseng by three strokes to win.
Lewis performed especially well in the 2012 season, winning four events on the LPGA Tour. She won the Mobile LPGA Classic in April, beating compatriot Lexi Thompson by one stroke. In June she won the ShopRite LPGA Classic in an impressive four stroke victory over Catherine Hull, beating Thompson again in September to win the Navistar LPGA Classic.
Lewis had won two events this season prior to Sunday’s major victory – she was victorious at the HSBC Women’s Champions and the LPGA Founders Cup earlier this year. With her first major win at the age of 28, this player proves that passion and dedication can overcome any physical challenge and enjoy a successful career.
